Where can I download Signals & Shadows?
Signals & Shadows is now available on the App Store for iPhone and iPad. You can download it for free from the App Store. The app requires iOS 15.1 or later.
What is the STEEP Framework?
STEEP stands for Social, Technological, Economic, Environmental, and Political. It's a framework for categorizing weak signals into different domains of change, helping you organize and understand the forces shaping the future.
How does backcasting work?
Backcasting is a strategic planning method where you start with a desired future vision and work backwards to identify the steps needed to reach it. In Signals & Shadows, you can set goals for specific time horizons (like 2030 or 2050) and create milestone roadmaps leading back to the present.
What are 'Shadows'?
Shadows track what's declining or dying: systems, behaviors, technologies that are fading away. Understanding what's ending reveals space for new opportunities and helps you see the full picture of change, not just what's emerging.
How does the app store my data?
All your data is stored locally on your device using an encrypted database. Nothing is uploaded to any servers. Your strategic insights stay completely private and under your control.
Can I export my data?
Yes! You can export all your signals, shadows, backcasting plans, and megatrends as JSON files. This allows you to backup your data or analyze it with external tools.
Will there be a web version or Android app?
Signals & Shadows is launching on iOS first. We may consider other platforms in the future based on user feedback and demand.
How do megatrends work?
Megatrends are synthesized from multiple isolated signals. You can combine several related signals to identify broader forces shaping the world. This helps you see patterns and systemic changes that individual signals might not reveal on their own.
Troubleshooting
App won't open
Make sure you have iOS 15.1 or later installed. Try restarting your device. If the problem persists after launch, uninstall and reinstall the app.
Data seems to be missing
Check if you're on the same device where you created the data. The app stores data locally, so it won't sync across devices. If you've recently updated the app, try restarting it.
Can't export data
Make sure you have storage permissions enabled. Go to Settings and ensure Signals & Shadows has permission to save files. Then try exporting again.
App feels slow
Try closing other apps to free up memory. Signals & Shadows is designed to handle large amounts of data efficiently, but performance may slow if your device is low on memory.
